  • Organic Versus Paid Search – Which is Best?

July 14th, 2008 by No Doubt Marketing

One of the biggest areas of contention in the SEO world is whether or not organic search results are better than paid search results. There really is no set answer to this question, but there are specific benefits and drawbacks to each. Let’s take a look at both organic and paid search options and see how different variables can affect their success rates.

If you’re not familiar with the term organic results, it basically means search engine traffic that occurs as a result of SEO efforts, and not through paid means.

Organic Results – Pros and Cons

Organic results are popular, mainly because this is one of the best ways to advertise your site for free. Once you’ve put in the actual work of optimizing your site, organic results will continue to pay off over the long term.

The main problem with this is that it is not an effective means of getting a lot of traffic in a hurry, and it may be months before you start seeing results. Relying on organic means for traffic will not be useful if you are launching a new product or trying to drive up your site’s traffic.

Paid Results – Pros and Cons

Of course, since you are paying for these results, there is a harsher light cast on them. You expect more from paid search, but it may not always pay off. Unless you have targeted the right niche and done your SEO homework, your overall ROI may be quite low.

However, if you are trying to announce a new product, paid search will produce results much quicker than organic search will. With the right keywords, you can easily rank well on search results and your ad will get noticed.

The bottom line? For the best results, it is important to rely on both forms. When combined, the overall results are much better.

The key to success with both organic and paid results is targeting the correct keywords, working hard to optimize your site and having a flair for knowing how to reach out to potential customers.

Our next post will cover how to accomplish this, regardless of your site’s topic or your SEO experience.
